(NaturalNews) An unlicensed vaccine being quietly shipped into the U.K. from the Czech Republic is sparking controversy as it may be linked to causing severe allergic reactions. Medi-Mumps, a single mumps vaccine cultured from dog kidney cells, is being touted by some as an alternative to the controversial combination measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, but others have major concerns about both its source and its potential for triggering severe canine allergies.

Christina England from VacTruth.com reports that Medi-Mumps will be available in private U.K. health clinics beginning in June, and that it is intended for children that are allergic to eggs — many vaccines are produced using eggs cultures — and for children whose parents are opposed to MMR. Though not officially approved for use, Medi-Mumps will be an option for parents who request it as part of a single vaccine regimen of immunization.

But children with dog allergies will still have to steer clear of the Medi-Mumps vaccine, which could trigger the same type of severe allergic reactions that a typical egg-cultured vaccine sometimes triggers in children with egg allergies. In fact, based on egg-cultured vaccines’ reputation of potentially triggering new egg allergies, it is likely that the dog-based vaccine will also trigger new canine allergies in some children.

Report Cites Problems in CDC Vaccine Program

Childhood vaccines administered via a free federal program may be inappropriately stored, which could affect their potency and efficacy, according to government inspectors.

A report from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) found that vaccines stored at the offices of 76% of a sample of providers involved in the CDC program were exposed to inappropriate temperatures for at least five cumulative hours during a 2-week inspection period.

Some providers also also stored expired vaccines with unexpired ones, the inspectors found.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, which wasn’t involved in the study, said in a statement that it “encourages all practices to continue monitoring vaccine storage and handling according to [CDC program] guidelines and, where necessary, to take steps to regain compliance with those guidelines.”

The AAP noted that despite these issues, the vaccines “were not found to be unsafe, and revaccination of children is not needed.”

AAP president Robert Block, MD, called “for improved resources and funding for the [Vaccines for Children] program to support the necessary technology and infrastructure for physician offices so that the program is able to deliver needed immunizations to all eligible children.”

The CDC’s Vaccines for Children program provides free immunizations through a network of 61 grantees and 44,000 providers. It administered 82 million doses to nearly 40 million children in 2010, at a cost of about $3.6 billion.

In its report, the OIG analyzed a sample of 45 program providers from five grantees with the highest volume of vaccines ordered in 2010. The agency conducted site visits, interviewed vaccine coordinators, observed vaccine management practices, and measured vaccine storage temperatures over a 2-week period.

During that time, they found that the majority of storage temperatures were within the required ranges, but vaccines stored by 76% of providers were exposed to inappropriate temperatures for at least 5 cumulative hours over the 2 weeks.

That can reduce vaccine potency and efficacy, the investigators wrote, increasing the risk that children don’t get maximum protection against preventable diseases.

The report also revealed that 13 providers stored expired vaccines together with unexpired ones, increasing the risk of handing out the wrong vaccine.

Also, the selected providers generally didn’t meet vaccine management requirements, investigators said, and didn’t maintain required documentation for the program.

None of the grantees met all of the program oversight requirements, they added, and site visits didn’t make providers more likely to meet their vaccine management requirements over time.

OIG recommended that CDC continue to work with grantees and providers to ensure that vaccines are stored properly, that expired vaccines are kept separate from good product, and that grantees better manage their inventories and meet all oversight requirements.
