Friends and Enemies of Your Right to Know

In recent weeks, several public interest groups, including the Organic Consumers Association, Cornucopia Institute, Mercola.com, and Natural News, have pointed out the gross hypocrisy and greed of large food and beverage corporations which profit from the sale of billions of dollars of their proprietary organic and “natural” food brands while at the same time funneling large sums of money to the Monsanto-led campaign to defeat the November 6th GMO labeling ballot initiative (Proposition 37) in Califor
nia. These organic and “natural” traitor companies and brands include: Kellogg’s (Kashi, Bear Naked, Morningstar Farms); General Mills (Muir Glen, Cascadian Farm, Larabar); Dean Foods (Horizon, Silk, White Wave); Smucker’s (R.W. Knudsen, Santa Cruz Organic); Coca-Cola (Honest Tea, Odwalla); Safeway (“O” Organics); Kraft (Boca Burgers and Back to Nature); Con-Agra (Orville Redenbacher’s Organic, Hunt’s Organic, Lightlife); and PepsiCo (Naked Juice, Tostito’s Organic, Tropicana Organic).
California’s Prop 37 will not only require labels on genetically engineered foods, but will also ban the fraudulent (and highly profitable) industry practice of marketing GMO-tainted foods as “natural.”
Big Biotech and Big Food corporations already have dumped $25 million dollars into defeating Prop 37. The “Yes on 37″ campaign has raised only $3 million so far, in part because most of the wealthy organic elite (Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, Stonyfield, etc.) are still sitting on the sidelines.
If the Nov. 6th GMO right-to-know ballot initiative (Prop 37), currently supported by the overwhelming majority of voters, passes in California – the eighth largest economy in the world – it will have the same impact across the United States as a national law.
“Just as we’ve observed in Europe, where labeling of food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is mandatory, we fully expect that when given a choice, consumers will choose organic or non-GMO products,” said Mark A. Kastel, Co-Director of Wisconsin-based Cornucopia. “And the industrial food lobby is fully cognizant of this – that’s why they’re fighting like hell against this grassroots effort.”
Large food companies who oppose GMO labeling have already admitted to reporters that if they are required to label their products in California as containing GMOs, they are not likely to try to hide this fact in the other 49 states and Canada. Just as in the European Union-where mandatory GMO labeling has been required by law for over a decade-the USA Titans of Food Inc. will most likely change their product formulations to remove all GMO ingredients, rather than risk tarnishing their brand image by slapping the “skull and crossbones” GMO label on their packages.
“Consumers are increasingly interested in ‘voting with their forks,’ and many want to support companies that share their values,” says Charlotte Vallaeys of the Cornucopia Institute. “But consumers may not realize that many organic and ‘natural’ brands are owned by the very same corporations that are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars each, or even millions, in an effort to scuttle Proposition 37 in California.”
We need to send a clear message to these traitor brands, in the only language they understand: lost profits and lower sales. Today, the Organic Consumers Association and Mercola.com are formally calling for a global boycott of the following organic and “natural” brands:
* Kashi (owned by Kellogg, which has contributed $632,000 to defeat Proposition 337). Kashi’s so-called “natural” breakfast cereals have tested positive for the presence of GMOs. Kellogg also owns the “natural” brands Bear Naked andMorningstar Farms.
* Silk soymilk (owned by the nation’s largest dairy, Dean Foods, which has contributed $253,000 to the effort to kill Proposition 37). Dean Foods also owns White Wave Tofu and Horizon milk and dairy products.
* R.W. Knudsen (owned by Smucker, which has contributed $388,000 to defeat proposition 37). Smucker also ownsSanta Cruz Organic.
* Cascadian Farm (owned by General Mills, which has contributed $520,000 to defeat proposition 37). General Mills also owns Larabar and Muir Glen.
* Honest Tea (owned by Coca-Cola which has contributed $1,164,400 to defeat Proposition 37). Coca-Cola also ownsOdwalla.
* Naked Juice (owned by PepsiCo which has contributed $1,716,300 to defeat Proposition 37). PepsiCo also ownsTostito’s Organic and Tropicana Organic.
* “O” Organics (Safeway’s private label line of organic foods). Safeway, like other “No on 37″ companies, is a dues-paying member of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, which has contributed $375,000 to defeat Prop 37.
Skeletal Fluorosis: What Could Fluoride Be Doing to Us?
Elizabeth Renter
Activist Post
Skeletal fluorosis is at endemic levels in at least 25 countries around the world. In the two countries where it is most prevalent – China and India – it affects 2.7 million and 6 million people respectively.
But what is fluorosis, how can it be prevented, and are we at risk?
Fluoride Ingestion and Skeletal Fluorosis
Skeletal fluorosis occurs when too much fluoride builds up in the body. In China and India, for example, the high levels of skeletal fluorosis are believed to come from drinking water as well as inhaling coal being used as an indoor fuel source.
It is a debilitating disease, especially in later stages. While in the beginning, the achy joints and stiffness may resemble arthritis, advanced fluorosis causes severe deformities as the ligaments of the neck and vertebrae calcify (harden), muscle tissue wastes away, and movement becomes more and more limited.
Scientific surveys indicate that any water supply containing more than 1 ppm of fluoride to be a risk for skeletal fluorosis. In the United States, 1 ppm is the average amount of fluoride being purposefully added to drinking water. But in addition to consuming fluoride through drinking water, it is also heavily absorbed in hot showers, and can be found in food at 180x the amount in drinking water.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set the “maximum containment level” at 4 ppm. This simply means that anything up to 4 ppm is of no concern to the U.S. government.
So, why isn’t fluorosis as common in the U.S.? It’s believed that in the hotter climates of China and India, for example, that people drink more water, leading to increased fluoride consumption. Also, malnutrition, which is more common in those countries, can leave the body particularly susceptible.
But, experts are concerned that it is prevalent in the United States, just at earlier stages of the disease, and going undetected.
Although research has been dedicated to the toxicity of fluoride in the U.S., the government wants the substance in our water and little has been done, on a large scale level, to combat it. Fluoride supplements are even pushed on the public, in addition to the fluoride put in our water.
Because the early stages of skeletal fluorosis include symptoms very similar to arthritis, it is commonly misdiagnosed as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. And without much information to educate medical “professionals” on the signs and symptoms of fluoride toxicity, those diagnoses aren’t being challenged.
From FluorideAlert.org:
Of course, since the early symptoms of fluorosis mimic arthritis, the question naturally arises as to whether the now near-epidemic rate of arthritis in the US, is related to the increased ingestion of fluoride that has occurred over the past 50 years. The question is particularly relevant considering that there is no known cause (other than ‘aging’) for common forms of arthritis, and that arthritis appears to be impacting adults at increasingly younger ages.
Finally, in addition to your water and food, you are getting fluoride each day in your toothpaste. Dental fluorosis is the cell damage that occurs on the teeth – it is classified as a “mineral disorder of the teeth.”
With research already showing that fluoride lowers IQ, what on earth is fluoride doing to your organs if it can cause mental damage, eat away the tough protective enamel of your teeth, and permanently damage your bones?

Unhealthy, Obese Parents More Likely to have Children with Defects

While the push for achieving healthy weight for pregnancies has mostly focused on mothers, researchers in Melbourne, Australia, have found that a father’s health can dramatically affect sperm and fetal development. According to research by the University of Melbourne’s Department of Zoology, a father’s obesity can negatively impact sperm, pregnancy success, and placental and fetal development.
The World Health Organization states that the rate of unhealthy weight and obesity of adult men in Australia has tripled over three decades to 75% (the global average is 48%).
“A lot of men don’t understand what contribution they’re having [in pregnancy], but they need to be healthy before conceiving,” says researcher Professor David Gardner. “Sperm needs to be match fit for the games of life and creating life is the biggest thing that we can do.”
Animal Studies in Obesity and Fertility
Using in vitro fertilization (IVF), Dr. Gardner and his colleagues studied the effects of paternal obesity on embryo implantation into the womb and subsequent fetal development. The animal study used two groups of male mice—one of healthy weight and one of obese mice fed the equivalent of a western fast food diet for several weeks. Embryo implantation into the womb and fetal development for groups with obese fathers had lowered rates—up to 15%, according to PhD candidate Natalie Binder.
“Furthermore, placental weight and development was significantly less for embryos derived from the sperm of obese males,” she adds. “Paternal obesity not only negatively affects embryo development, but also impacts on the successful implantation into the womb.”
And this isn’t the only research showing how obesity can significantly affect unborn children in a negative way. Other research has drawn a direct link between obese mothers and autistic babies, finding that overweight pregnant women have a startling 67% higher chance of having an autistic child than those who are not. In the study, the researchers note that the extreme prevalency of obesity in the United States is serious cause for alarm, as autism rates continue to skyrocket.
Hidden Causes of Obesity
The western diet isn’t alone to blame for the modern obesity epidemic, unfortunately. Here are some surprising culprits behind obesity and weight gain in the modern era:
- Antibiotics
- Pollution
- Shampoo, plastic, and pesticides containing chemicals like bisphenol-A, phthalates, PCBs, POPs, and other endocrine disrupters

Brain-eating amoeba fatal in 99% of cases ‘could come from your own faucet’
Beth Stebner
DailyMail.co.uk

[...]Last year in Louisiana, two people died from a single-celled organism that thrives in warm, freshwater after using tap water for flushing their sinuses.
The amoeba, known as Naegleria fowleri, can cause primary amoebic meningoecephalitis (PAM), which is fatal in 99 per cent of cases.
Both victims, a 51-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, had used tap water in neti pots to flush out their sinuses and died days later. They lived in separate areas of the state.
New Study Links Aluminium Intake to Osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s Disease – How to Reduce Exposure
A new study published in the International Journal of Electrochemical Science has discovered that cooking with aluminium increases the risk of developing Osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s Disease.
The human body can tolerate 1mg of aluminium per 1kg of bone weight before it begins to accumulate in the brain.
ASTONISHINGLY, it was found that up to 139.2 milligrams of aluminium per person could be consumed in one meal depending on how the food was prepared.
It is common practice around the world to cook, prepare and store food in aluminium. When aluminium is cold, leakage into food is minimal. However, when food is prepared in environments above 150c (302f), aluminium leakage into food becomes alarming.
The researchers examined five different types of meat (beef, water buffalo, mutton, chicken, and turkey) that were packed in aluminium foil and cooked in ovens at various temperatures above 150c.
They found that aluminium concentration exploded by 378% in red meats and 215% in poultry. It was also identified that fat content in meat, in addition to the cooking process, impacted on how much aluminium was found in food.
It was also revealed that highly acidic foods wrapped in aluminium foil contained twice the amount of aluminium and that the size of an aluminium cooking pan also determined how much aluminium leaked into food.
Food manufacturers frequently use aluminium to store and preserve food. It’s cheap and highly malleable. However, there are ways to reduce your intake of aluminium from your diet.
How to Reduce Aluminium from Your Diet1) Ordinarily, drinking water contains low levels of aluminium. Therefore, try to avoid drinking water and fizzy drinks that are stored in aluminium containers.
2) Avoid using antiperspirants (deodorants) that contain aluminium. Many leading brands of antiperspirants contain large quantities of aluminium. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology found that long-term exposure of human mammary epithelial cells to aluminium resulted in an elevated risk of developing cancer.
3) It is recommended to take calcium, magnesium and zinc supplements to help prevent your body from accumulating high levels of aluminium.
4) There are alternative remedies and food that can help detox the body of aluminium. Lemon Juice, Turmeric, Garlic, Kelp and Cilantro are all widely used to detox the body of Aluminium. Also, soaking your feet for 30 minutes or more in a solution of Epsom salts (1/2 cup) and sea salt (1/2 cup) can remove aluminium through your feet.

Final Remarks
This study concluded that aluminium foil is not suitable for cooking, especially with food that is highly acidic, and that ingestion of food baked with aluminium foil could aid the development of life-threatening illnesses.
There is enough evidence now to suggest that people who are exposed to high levels of aluminium are at risk of developing terminal illnesses and other complications to their health.
The difficulty we all face is that aluminium is used in almost all of our foods.
In comparison to the difficulties we face in removing fluoride from our diet, aluminium is so prevalent that it’s almost impossible to remove all artificially derived aluminium from our lives.
THE best thing we can do is create awareness in our community about the dangers of aluminium and seek the government to label the risks of exposure to aluminium, especially when cooking.
