Baptist Memorial Hospital

Baptist Memorial opened in 1955 with 125 rooms, including 35 beds at Wolfson Memorial Children’s Hospital, and Has Been Licensed in 1956 from The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals at Chicago. Accreditation is necessary for hospitals for payment from federally funded Medicare and Medicaid programs.

A 28-bed medical-surgical unit was set on the floor at Baptist Memorial in early 1957, bringing the entire capacity at the time into 202 beds. To satisfy the greater need for private rooms for individuals, Baptist Memorial converted 14 semi-private rooms to private rooms. By late 1957, Baptist Memorial climbed to 268 rooms and had over 300 doctors on staff.

Expansion of facilities and medical specialties

Baptist Memorial expanded its solutions together with the Charles Judson Williams Cancer Treatment Center in the hospital on March 2, 1972. The cancer treatment center was committed to the late Mr. Williams, a Jacksonville businessman, and a philanthropist who died in 1956.  His widow, Edna Sproull Williams, gave funds to equip the cancer therapy center with equipment that has been considered state-of-the-art at that moment.

Additionally, in 1972, Jacksonville Children’s Hospital opened over the prior Wolfson Memorial’s facilities. This was followed a year later by the launching of the Wolfson Family Medical Tower, bringing the entire bed count for Baptist facilities in Jacksonville to 579. Baptist Memorial added into its collection of medical specialties in 1974 with the introduction of a Gastroenterology Laboratory to concentrate on digestive tract ailments. Women’s boards function as a volunteer-driven supply of philanthropy for hospitals.

This was followed a year later by the launching of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Baptist Medical Center paid tribute to one of its main benefactors, the Wolfson Family Foundation, by surveying Jacksonville Wolfson Children’s Hospital as Wolfson Children’s Hospital in 1992. In spite of the fact that the first medical clinic opened its entryways with not exactly a hundred beds, the little structure served 1,315 patients during its first year of activity.
